We would like to invite you to the third rendition of our FREE course run by the Plastic Surgery Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford on 27th September 2016. Attached is the provisional agenda for the day and the course poster.
Basic Surgical Skills & Principles in Plastic Surgery Course
This national course aims to teach you the fundamental skills and principles that are applied in Plastic Surgery, covering knot tying, suturing techniques, wound management, local anaesthetics, excision of skin lesion, and basic concepts of local flaps. The course will be taught through short lectures and practical sessions with animal tissue.
The course will be led by consultant and SpRs to ensure the quality of teaching is optimal.
Who should attend?
Any clinical medical student interested in:
- Perfecting his/her suturing and knot tying skills
- Learning or fine-tuning his/her knowledge on wound healing
- Pursuing a career in Plastics, ENT, Maxfax, Gen Surg, Dermatology, A&E or other applied professions
- Learning the skills and principles used in Plastic Surgery
0830 – 0900 Registration – Pastries / Tea / Coffee
0900 – 0915 Introduction – Aims / Plan of the day
0915 – 1000 Knot tying: Basic square knot, 1-hand tie, 2-hand tie (Practical)
1000 – 1015 Principles of Plastic Surgery – reconstructive ladder / wound healing (Lecture)
1015 – 1030 Assessment and management of wounds, e.g. facial laceration / pulp amputation (Lecture)
1030 – 1045 Covidien talk on suturing materials and their products (Lecture)
1045 – 1100 Tea break
1100 – 1115 General handling of surgical instruments (Lecture)
1115 – 1300 Suturing: Interrupted, Mattress, Deep dermal, Subcuticular, Running, Running lock, Corner stitch (Practical)
1300 – 1400 Lunch break – Please provide own lunch
1400 – 1430 LA administration / Excision of skin lesions / Basic concepts of flaps (Lecture)
1430 – 1630 Skin lesions, LA administration, Excision of skin lesions, Closure of wounds, Local flaps - Advancement / Rotational / Transposition (Practical)
1630 – 1700 Summary of the day / Q&A / Feedback form
There are 35 places available offered on a first come, first served bases. In previous years this event has sold out very quickly so please book early to secure a place.
The course is FREE but to ensure all places are filled on the day and places are not wasted, we require £30 deposit which will be refunded on attendance. There is also a small non-refundable booking fee.
