Event description

Description

Basin Bathhouse is an experiential project for Glasgow’s canal quarter, produced by Clara Weale and Nikki Kane. Temporarily inhabiting and transforming an under-utilised site at Applecross Basin, Basin Bathhouse will be a space for shared experience, centred around a wood burning mobile sauna, brought to Glasgow specially for this project.

The Bathhouse will be in situ for a period of four days over the May Bank Holiday 2019 (Friday 3rd - Monday 6th May) offering free sauna sessions and encouraging consideration of the canal’s past, present and future as a place of work and rest. Accompanying the Bathhouse will be a programme of artworks further exploring themes of labour and relaxation, tangible and intangible heritage.

The sauna sessions will be a guided process - limited to five people per hour to ensure we can offer an experience which is thoughtful, relaxing and safe.

Basin Bathhouse has been made possible through support by the Glasgow Canal’s Stalled Spaces scheme and Scottish Canals.

Sensory Movement Workshop with live percussion, led by Ashanti Harris

This workshop begins with the moving, dancing body. Drawing from a wide constellation of practices, propositions, exercises, perspectives and people, we will work with the act of movement and dance as an exploration of what the body can do, it capacities, it's languages and its articulations. We will begin with a series of exercises which will question how we can physically, collectively and individually be in movement, re-defining our relationship to space, our environment and each other.

We will use this space to move, share, dance, sweat, shake and question. Welcoming all forms and expressions of identity and experiences, we will begin together from wherever we all are. Wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Places are available to book via the 'register' button. Please note this workshop will take place outdoors.

Wallow by MM Whawell

Wallow is a new audio work by artist MM Whawell which follows a fictional narrative describing three performers presenting, improvising and struggling with a site-specific performance at Applecross Basin. The work will be broadcast online at set times over the weekend when visitors are invited to tune in on site and elsewhere to collectively imagine the scenarios unfolding.

Please note, the audio will be broadcast via an embedded player on the basinbathhouse.com website. To access the work on site, visitors will need to bring a device such as a smart phone with a personal 3/4G connection and their own headphones. If you want to listen to the work on site, but do not have access to a device please get in touch via info@commongroundprojects.org to book one of a small number of MP3 players which we will have available. We are also able to provide a transcript of the audio for visitors who are D/deaf or who would prefer to encounter the work in this way.

Saturday 4 May, 8.30am
Sunday 5 May, 2.30pm
Monday 6 May, 4.30pm
Unticketed, please gather at the Bathhouse at 1 Applecross St, Glasgow G4 9SP

Information for sauna session attendees

Bookings are for a one-hour slot at Basin Bathhouse, which includes an introduction and time to change at The Whisky Bond, a short walk to the canalside where the Bathhouse is located, approx. 25 minutes of time to use the sauna and surrounding space, and time to return and change.

Saturday afternoon slots (2-3pm and 3-4pm) are women-only, inclusive of Trans, Intersex women, non-binary and gender fluid people. Please only book these slots if this is how you identify.

Basin Bathhouse is a temporary event open for one weekend only, so there are limited slots available to attend - therefore please only book one slot. If you book multiple tickets/dates we will contact you to check which booking you want to keep, and reserve the right to cancel your bookings.

Toilets will be available at The Whisky Bond. There will be limited low-tech, outdoor showers to rinse off. There will be limited space to store belongings, however we cannot guarantee security so please do not bring any valuables.

At a minimum you must wear swimwear during your session, and feel free to wear additional layers if you prefer.

There will be limited towels available so please bring your own towel or bathrobe, particularly if you intend to shower.

You must be aged 16 or over to attend Basin Bathhouse and make use of the sauna.

We aim for Basin Bathhouse to be accessible, comfortable and welcoming for all those who wish to attend. If you have any medical conditions that may affect your use and enjoyment of the sauna, please speak with your GP before attending. Users are encouraged to spend short amounts of time in the sauna, take regular breaks and to respond to their body, which will tell them when it is time to leave. Pregnant people should only stay in the sauna for a few minutes at a time to avoid raising their core body temperature, and and those with any medical concerns should make appropriate accommodations too.

The sauna itself is accessed by a small ramp, however there are thresholds onto the ramp and into the sauna, so it is not a completely level access. Inside the sauna there are two tiers of benches. The route from The Whisky Bond to the canalside sauna involves a short walk with a few steps and a cobbled path. If needed, we can make adjustments, for example to allow for changing space within the Bathhouse space itself - please do get in touch with us directly at info@commongroundprojects.org to discuss any requirements or if you have specific questions.
