About this Event

This is a three day workshop (non-residential) being held at NTS Threave Gardens, Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway. Threave is an excellent site to study bats, and was Scotland's first official bat reserve, with 8 species confirmed to be present.

During the event our trainer will deliver sessions on the following:

  • Introduction to Bat Echolocation
  • Species Identification
  • Call Structure & Habitat Influences
  • Workshop Sessions Using Your Own Preferred Software/Detector
  • Bat Social Calls
  • Confusing Non-Bat Sounds
  • Practical Dusk Sessions
  • Hints & Tips
  • During the event you will be given handouts relating to any material delivered (e.g. PowerPoint slides)

Our trainer for this event is Neil Middleton of BatAbility Courses & Tuition, lead author of 'Social Calls of the Bats of Britain & Ireland', and author of the forthcoming book, 'Is That A Bat?' For details regarding Neil's experience & background please visit: About Neil Middleton

Additional Important Information

  • Although not essential, delegates should bring to the event any bat-related survey equipment they have (e.g. bat detector), as well as a laptop with their preferred analysis software pre-loaded.
  • This is a classroom & outdoor event. As such outdoor practical activities are planned, and you should come appropriately prepared to be outdoors, including at night.
  • All delegates should bring a torch/headtorch for health & safety purposes.
  • We have free parking on/adjacent to our training location.
  • Tea/Coffee/Biscuits are provided. There are various options immediately next to, or within a 5 minute drive, for getting lunch/snacks.
  • If you require accommodation locally we would suggest that you carry out an internet search around Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway, DG7 1HS, within which (& nearby) there are numerous options available.
