Speakers:
Nick Baird – “Turkey’s place in the geopolitics of energy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine”
Nick Baird joined the Foreign Office in 1983 and had a long and illustrious career including a posting as the Ambassador in Ankara from 2006-2009. Since leaving the FCO he has taken up a post as group corporate affairs director of energy firm, Centrica, and is also a Trustee of Kew Gardens and the President of BATAS.
William Hale – “Turkey’s energy dilemmas: between the economy and the environment“
William Hale is Professor Emeritus of Turkish Politics at SOAS and the author of numerous studies on Turkey and its history and politics including the classic text “Turkish Foreign Policy 1774-2000. He retains a keen interest in the country and is an active member of BATAS and the BIAA.
Candan Ertubey – “Everyday challenges facing Turkish communities in the UK: a psychologist’s view”
Dr Candan Ertubey is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of East London. Her paper will look at the psychological aspects of the experience of the Turkish diaspora in the UK.
John O’Connell – “Şık bir gazel oldu’: style and taste in Turkish classical music under Atatürk”
Professor John O’Connell is an ethnomusicologist with a specialist interest in cultural history based at the University of Cardiff. He has I have recently completed a monograph on music and commemoration as it relates to the Gallipoli Campaign from the perspective of the Australians and the Turks, the British and the Germans.
