Event description
Pain Management in an Electronic Age - Websites, e-Learning and Social Media

About this Event

Dr Douglas Natusch

Consultant Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Dean, Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth University

Douglas has been a Consultant in the Pain Team in South Devon for 20 years and is Clinical Service Lead. He helped set up a process creating stratified care for patients with spinal pain locally called 'Springback' along with the first interface spinal service. As a result of this work, he and other members of the Torbay team were recruited to the steering panel for the 'National Spinal Collaboration', NHS Modernisation Agency, 2001-2003. Subsequently, the Torbay team developed a website for patients called 'Reconnect2life' which won an award at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Pain Society. In 2016 he was recruited to lead e-PAIN, the NHS's National e-Learning Program, a collaboration between e-Learning for Healthcare, the Faculty of Pain Medicine and the British Pain Society. In 2019 he was also appointed Associate Dean for the Peninsula Medical School having been a longstanding Academic Clinical and Pastoral Tutor for medical students. He joined twitter in 2016 (@DouglasNatusch) and in 2017/18 helped co-host 'tweet chats' with Dr Liam Farrell (ex BMJ Columnist and retired GP) and Mr Pete Moore of the Pain Toolkit. He is delighted to be invited to talk about Websites, e-Learning and Social Media - looking at pain management in an 'electronic' age.

Background

The Pain Forum was launched in 2000 after the recognition that pain was of interest to a large number of healthcare professionals in the greater Bath area. These meetings have been well supported by clinicians in the local area. We invite world leaders in pain research to present their work and discuss developments. These speakers are chosen for the high quality of their research and their ability to communicate it well. Perhaps the most important part of the forum is that everyone is invited to carry on discussions afterwards.

What is involved?

There is a two-part structure. Where possible the meeting will include:

1. Invited Presentation - from 4.00pm – 5.00pm we will have the presentation from Dr Douglas Natusch.

2. Get together - afterwards we will either have a cup of tea together or support the Bath economy and trade by visiting a local hostelry for refreshment.

Chair:

Dr Peter Brook
