Event description

Description

Join our NEW Bats & Brownies event for a real wild night out at Racy Ghyll Farm!

Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale, Racy Ghyll Farm and the Rebanks Family have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep, but most recently James' strong advocation of nature-friendly farming, and his acclaimed book “The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District”.

With a mosaic of foraging habitats and roosting structures throughout the Matterdale Valley, Racy Ghyll Farm provides an excellent base to enjoy the acoustic and visual spectacle of bats foraging at night.

You will be welcomed to the Racy Ghyll education room by your Wild Intrigue guides Heather and Cain, and landowner James Rebanks, where you can enjoy a short introduciton to the farm and the ecology of bats, whilst enjoying hot drinks and delicios brownies made by the Rebanks family, before heading out to discover the bats of Racy Ghyll.

You will be introduced to the diverse and awe-inspiring sounds of different bat species as they go about their nightly routines. Our specialist equipment will bring a new level to eavesdropping on bats; our Echo Meter Touch 2 PRO, will allow you to hear, but also see the ultrasonic echolocation calls of bats on a colour spectrogram! We will also have heterodyne Magenta 4 detectors to use, pefect to scroll through and pinpoint the exact individual contact calls of bats, as well as FSC Bat Guides for use.

Perhaps we will hear the drip-dropping of large Noctules as they pass through their nightly commute, or the 'zzzips' of Pipistrelles as the catch their insect prey.

FAQ's

Can children join this Mini Exped?

This mini-exped is suitable for all ages. We think it's amazing that children are intrigued by the fascinating world of bats so under 18’s are very welcome to join under supervision of a responsible, paying adult. We have found that children aged 5 and over are able to enjoy and appreciate bat ecology most.

What is the terrain like?

The walk will take place largely on farm tracks, however we may venture into grassy areas at times. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Are dogs allowed on this Mini Exped?

Sorry but as Racy Ghyll is an active farm, dogs aren't allowed on this walk, please get in touch with us at info@wildintrigue.co.uk if you have any queries about this.

Where is the meeting place?

We will meet at Racy Ghyll Farm, Penruddock, Matterdale, Cumbria. Full directions to the site can be provided upon booking.

This is parking available, however this is limited, so please car share wheere possible. Please arrive around ten minutes before the start time of 7.30pm.

Cancellations and refunds

Bats aren't particulalrly fussy creatures and are active every night throughout summer, however heavy rain and strong winds would reduce bat activitiy, and would also make for an unpleasant midsummer stroll. If we need to cancel the event we will inform you a day in advance, and you will be refunded your full amount.

You will also be made aware of our rescheduled date in advance of it going public.

If you wish to cancel your booking with us, you may request a refund up to 7 days before the Bats & Brownies date and time.
