About this Event

The Bayes Centre hosted virtual Turing@Edinburgh Seminar Series is intended to create the opportunity for local members of the Alan Turing Institute research community to interact, share experiences and explore multi-disciplinary AI and data science research opportunities.

This series of seminars have been created to showcase presentations on existing Edinburgh Turing Projects, with a focus on innovative and interdisciplinary technical research, creating awareness of research across the University and with the national Alan Turing Institute network.

Speaker Profiles

Prof Subramanian Ramamoorthy holds the Chair of Robot Learning and Autonomy in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, where he is also the Director of the Institute of Perception, Action and Behaviour. He is an Executive Committee Member for the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2007. He is an elected Member of the UK Computing Research Committee, and has been a Member of the Young Academy of Scotland at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has also held Visiting Professorships at Stanford University and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

His research focus is on robot learning and decision-making under uncertainty, with particular emphasis on achieving safe and robust autonomy in human-centred environments.

Between 2017 - 2020, he served as Vice President - Prediction and Planning at FiveAI, a UK-based startup company developing autonomous vehicles technology. He continues to be involved with the company as Scientific Advisor.

Dr. Beatrice Alex is Chancellor’s Fellow at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute. She is an expert in text mining and natural language processing adapted for different domains and applications. She is co-lead of the Edinburgh Clinical NLP group and co-convener of the Humanities and Data Science interest group at the Turing. She is CoI on research analysing COVID hospital guidelines for the ISARIC-4C project and on adapting NLP methods to data analysed in the Advanced Care Research Centre. She also leads research on information extraction from brain imaging reports which she will present in this talk.
