Event description

Description

The University of New Mexico, Department of Anthropology will host its first ever Bayesian Chronological Modeling Workshop in Albuquerque on April 9–10, 2019.

Dr. Derek Hamilton from the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Center (SUERC) at the University of Glasgow and Dr. Tony Krus from the University of South Dakota, will teach this two-day interactive workshop. Space is very limited, so sign up now to learn how to develop and critically evaluate archaeological applications of Bayesian chronological modeling.

Day 1 (Tuesday, 9 April 2019, 09:00 to 16:30) Bayesian Modeling for Beginners will cover an introduction to radiocarbon dating and Bayesian chronological modeling with a series of practical exercises on calibration and the construction of simple 'Phase' and 'Sequence' models that form the building blocks of more complex chronological models.

Day 2 (Wednesday, 10 April 2019, 09:00 to 16:30) Advanced Modeling Techniques will cover the more advanced features in OxCal. We will cover marine and mixed-calibration model, age-depth and tree-ring sequence models, and finally discuss the use of simulation in the modeling process.

A printed workbook designed for the workshop will also be provided to all participants. The workbook will include descriptions of fundamental chronological modeling techniques, exercises demonstrating different techniques, and an annotated bibliography of key literature.

The cost for a 2-day ticket is $95 for students and $195 for non-students. The printed workbook is included in the ticket costs. Students will be e-mailed to request a scan of their current student ID to verify status. We will supply tea/coffee and snacks in the room, but will break for a short lunch period, during which the instructors will remain in the room to answer any questions (NB: there is a wide selection of fast food restaurants with 2–3 blocks of the venue).

It is possible to purchase a single-day ticket for Day 1 through Eventbrite. The prices are $65 for students and $115 for non-students. If you have attended a previous course by the organizers and wish only to attend Day 2, please contact us directly to make arrangements.

Participants are required to bring a laptop to the workshop and should prepare to use their laptops throughout the day. Exercises will be conducted with OxCal, a free, user friendly package.

If you register for the workshop, instructions on how to install OxCal locally on your laptop and other important information about the workshop will be emailed to you.
