BBC Design + Engineering are hosting their next Women in Tech event on 17th January 2019 in Salford, Media City. The evening will consist of several short talks from internal and external speakers, themed around what it's like to be a woman in technology. Followed by a networking session whilst enjoying refreshments and some food!

Technology is not just about software engineering, we have variety of different role functions that operate in our Design + Engineering division. We will have a variety of team members available during the networking session to talk about their job function and skills required, for example; Project Managers,Business Analysts, User Experience and Design, Testers and Product Managers.

This is a great opportunity for individuals to come along and find out more about what we do in our technology space at the BBC and hear from some inspiring women.

Shefaly Yogendra

“It’s Great to be a Woman in Tech…” Shefaly Yogendra, PhD has worked in and with the tech industry in business roles for 25 years. She started her career in corporate venturing in the computer hardware industry transitioning to IT enabled services, followed by nearly 18 years of working with investors seeking to invest in emerging technologies. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Ditto AI, a explainable AI company located in Ancoats, Manchester. Shefaly also spent 3 years building a luxury startup where technology enhanced consumer experience was the intended strategic differentiator but the startup did not raise funding in time. So she can also speak to failure as well as the theme of creative and tech.

Sarah Tulip

Sarah Tulip is the Operations Director of Software Cloud, a Leeds based technology business. She plays a key role in the Northern Powerhouse, is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was named on Northern Power Women’s Future List in 2017 for her work around diversity in the IT industry.

In 2018 she has been shortlisted for Role Model of the Year at the Women in IT Awards plus a finalist locally at the Leeds Digital Festival Awards as Facilitator of the Year

She is deeply passionate about getting more young women in to tech and helping more established women up the career ladder. Sarah stepped away from a senior role last year and took a career break of several months to focus on the importance of life and career.

Katie Roberts

“It’s Great to be a Woman in Tech…”Katie has worked as a Software Engineer for over 15 years, and is the Software Engineering Manager for the BBC Homepage and Content Discovery teams. She is also a mother to two young children and plays bass in a Pink Floyd tribute band.

Natalia Miller

Natalia Miller has been at the BBC for 3.5yrs now, starting with 2 years on the Software Engineering Graduate Scheme. Natalia and her team are working on building the new generation of Sport Data, ready to be used by Sport Web, Sport App and Red Button. They have had to adapt, improvise and use lean software development practices in the way they work in order to manage enforced changes before the final deadline.

Celia Smith

Celia Smith is a Product Manager for the Education Product Team – she will share with you her thoughts around ‘My Tech/My Expertise/My Perspective’
