Event description

Description

Following the success of the TextAV working group held in New York City last summer, BBC News Labs and BBC Connected Studio are holding the next collaborative hack event in this series, in London on 18th & 19th September 2018.

We are inviting leading technologists, application developers, and practitioners working in the area of online audio and video, with a particular focus on the use of captions and transcripts to facilitate and speed up the production process, to take part in this event.

Goals

The goal of this workshop is three-fold:

1. To provide an overview of current software projects and practices;

2. Explore challenges in the ecosystem, from transcription to URL addressability, GUIs for collaboration, automation, muxing and beyond;

3. To catalyse new open source collaborations to further build out the ecosystem.

Participants

We anticipate participation of teams from technology companies (Mozilla, IBM, YouTube) journalism (BBC, Buzzfeed, Fusion, NYT, Vox Media), public interest media (Internet Archive, Wikimedia, NPR), and others.

Provisional agenda

Day 1 - AM: Knowledge share; presentations that showcase projects & libraries

Day 1 - PM: Groups hack on their domains / topics (e.g. more documentation, new prototype, refactor module into standalone component from existing project, etc.)

Day 2 - AM: Groups hack on projects

Day 2 - PM: Documentation day + presentations

You can see more info on previous line up here as well as videos of presentations and notes.
