Event description

Dave Randall is a Left-leaning musician, whose gig as a guitarist with Faithless and other acts has allowed him to travel across the world and experience how music works on several domestic fronts. The musician turned author has put together a well researched and accessible book on the intersection of music and politics.

This is a BBMM2017 recommend book and we urge you buy a copy of 'Sound System – The Political Power of Music' (Pluto Press). But if you are prepared to wait, then you could be in with a good chance of winning a copy of the book donated by the author, by correctly answering this question: Can you name one UK top 10 British black music song inspired by apartheid South Africa? Closing date is May 25 2017.

Sound systemNana and Dave

We thank Dave for coming up to Harrow to give us a splendid BBMM @ 10 2016-17/Xtra History Session talking about his recently publishedd book 'Sound System – The Political Power of Music' (Pluto Press). He even played his guitar to demonstrate some of the musical intervals that were frown upon by the Church and feudal lords of old!

His stories of music and politics went from the 12th century - using secular music in resisting the Church and feudal lords, through to it being an integral part of the Arab Spring, to its use in grime music to articulate inner London issues.

Dave will be back in Harrow Mencap on June 5 to mark British Black Music Month with a 'Rock Against Racism: How Music And Culture Can Build Unity' presentation. Please enter this competition only is you can attend this particular event to pick up book, should you win. It's part of the Xtra History Sessions that take place at Harrow Mencap on Mondays 6.30 to 8.30pm. For programme or to book:
