Course description

This two-day workshop seeks to augment knowledge, understanding and skill in the application of the Bobath Concept towards recovery of functional movement within the hemiplegic upper limb. Participants will develop their clinical reasoning skills via a keynote lecture, patient workshops and practical sessions aimed at enhancing clinical effectiveness. Core clinical skills of movement analysis and facilitatory handling will be developed in order to enable participants to enhance the integration of posture and movement towards task activity. The consideration of movement efficiency, interferences to function and promotion of recovery will be informed by the current evidence base.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To review the neural and neuromuscular basis for efficient functional use of the upper limb

  1. To enhance awareness of postural adjustments and the kinetic chain underpinning functional use of the upper limb

  1. To utilise a structured and systematic analysis of reach and grasp components in order to identify areas for treatment intervention to enhance recovery

  1. To reflect on the assessment and treatment of two patients with upper limb deficits in order to further consider application of treatment

Tutor: Paul Johnson MCSP, MSC (Advanced Course Tutor)
