Advanced Chinese Language Teaching and Research Workshop

The British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) will hold an Advanced Chinese Course Teaching and Research Workshop on the 14-15 March 2020. The aims of this workshop include: advancing professional development, improving teaching and research levels of relevant advanced Chinese courses, and creating a bridge between the Mandarin Excellent Programme (MEP) and Chinese language teaching in the HEs. Members and non-members of BCLTS are all welcome to register.
The event is hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Nottingham. There are 40 places available for participants. In case of unforeseen circumstances, BCLTS reserves the right to conduct online training activities instead.

The executive editor-in-chief of International Chinese Education and Dr Zulei Wang of Beijing International Studies University, and Dr. Weichang Chen, Editor of International Chinese Teaching and Research will also brief on their journals’ submission requirements during the workshop.
Programme Outline:
1. The 14th of March is for teachers who are about to teach, or who are already teaching, Chinese Studies degree programs, advanced language courses or content modules at university level. This session is also aimed at teachers who are interested in the transition and/or transformation between MEP courses and university courses.
2. The 15th of March is for teachers who would like to develop their research and academic writing skills. In order to run the workshop efficiently, all participants are required to submit an abstract of their research work. This should be research that will be presented in the BCLTS conference on 29th June- 1st July, 2020 in Bangor, or that the researcher aims to submit to a similar international conference or journal.
The topics for the abstract include (but not limited to):

TCFL or TCSL course design and classroom teaching research

Contrastive analysis on international or regional course curriculums and syllabuses

Mixed teaching methods and application on the basis of the MOOC/teaching platform and other teaching technology

Research on character teaching materials, methods and effects

Research on culture studies and teaching

Research on primary and high school Chinese teaching (teaching resources, evaluation and immersion programmes)

The use and application of textbooks and supporting materials
-
Research on Chinese examinations and assessments
-
Research on language learners and language skills, teaching modes
-
Research on teaching Chinese for academic purposes (modes, methods and effects)

Research on (local) teacher training programmes

Case studies on language learners
Interested attendees should submit a brief research proposal or abstract on one of the above topics prior to the workshop to Dr. Shejiao XU conference@bclts.org.uk.

IMPORTANT: For full member attendees who need one night accommodation on 14th March will need to send Dr. Ying Peng a cheque of £60 as deposit please. We will return it when they attend the event but the cheque will be cashed if you fail to attend after the room reservation is made. The accomodation BCLTS provides are twin bedrooms shared by two colleagues of the same gender.
