Event description

Description

BCS Insights 2019 will be using one of the coolest buildings in London. The Crystal is home to Siemens, who opened it in 2012 as a global hub for debate on sustainable living and development. In keeping with BCS’s aim to make IT good for society, The Crystal is one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, setting a benchmark for sustainable building design. It is the only building in the world to achieve the highest certification in both the BREEAM and LEED schemes.

On the day BCS will showcase some AI to interact with in the ideation room with the winner of the BCS sponsored Lumen AI Art Award for 2018 Cecilie Falkenstrom. Her FRANK AI likes to engage in philosophical conversation – so feel free to ask your most pressing eternal verities! Throughout the venue we will also be showcasing other AI-generated art pieces.

SYNOPSIS

This event will host two main sessions. Each will start with a series of thought-provoking short talks from thinkers in the relevant field, and will be followed by an on-stage hosted interactive debate with the speakers.

Morning: Inclusion versus the skills gap

Talks on the experiences of often sidelined members of society – specifically on gender, age, ethnicity and disability. (Approx 1.25 hours)

Debate One: will look at how IT is doing in inclusion, where it can improve, and the huge potential of getting inclusion right. (Approx half-hour)

Debate Two: will look at these issues from the perspective of younger people, with a youth-oriented hosted debate. (Approx half-hour)

Afternoon: AI – the more we understand the less we fear

Talks on key areas of current AI – the concerns and limitations it has and its great potential for good. (Approx 1.5 hours)

Debate: will look at how we can better communicate the benefits of AI, whilst being realistic about its limitations to build trust in the profession.
