Expect an evening of entertainment, enlightening information, culture and food that’s good for the soul as we bring Black History Month celebrations to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Our inspirational speakers will give honest, authentic insight into their journeys to success whilst sharing the tactics they have deployed to overcome a series of unexpected challenges that threatened to derail their ambitions and aspirations.

Listen to live music from local band the ‘Bluenotes’ and prepare to be entertained by talented vocalists and performers.

This event is not to be missed! Open to Birmingham City University Students and Staff only(Free admission).

Programme

16:00 – 18:00 Food and exhibition in the Gallery Bar of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The exhibition features art produced by former and current BCU students in addition to a display of different artefacts from ADM archives.

18:00 – 18:10 Recital Hall - Welcome and Introduction

18:10 – 18:30 Zoe Bennett ‘The Motivational Queen’. Discussing the need for Resilience, never Giving Up; and the power of Networking.

18:30 – 18:45 Performance by the Blue Notes: A Birmingham-based band playing Jazz, Calypso Jazz and Reggae music. Originally formed by the late renowned Jamaican jazz saxophonist, Andy Hamilton MBE, the Blue Notes now carries on Andy's legacy and passion for showcasing established local musicians with its weekly residency at the Silvershine Jazz Club, Bearwood on Thursday evenings. The Blue Notes also work alongside young up and coming musicians, such as The Outer Circle, giving them the opportunity to experience performing in front of a live audience. The Blue Notes musicians comprise of family, friends and members of the community, with age ranges from 15 to 87.

18:45 – 19:00 AbouBakr Fathalla, Head of Operations and International Partnerships. Providing insight into internationalisation in higher education and its impact on student lives and future perspectives.

19:00 – 19:20 Performance by Dance with Stago. Showcasing African Cultural Dance to AfroBeats.

19:20 – 19:40 Alisa Harewood. The journey from becoming the first woman to become Vice President of sales and delivery in TATA Technologies to author of ‘No More Power Heels’ Alisa shares her journey in overcoming grief and poor mental health.

19:40 – 20:00 Performance by Blue Notes to close.
