Be Calm, Be Happy is a 6-week group course teaching mindfulness meditation, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, as an effective counter-balance to the stresses of life and as an opportunity to become happier.

Course Overview

Be Calm, Be Happy provides a gradual introduction to mindfulness and meditation and key teachings on positive happy living over six weekly classes. Each class includes guided mindfulness exercises and meditations, group discussions and practical exercises led by an experienced facilitator in a warm, friendly atmosphere with a maximum of 15 participants.

Week 1: Stopping and calming

Week 2: Turning to the positive

Week 3: Loving communication

Week 4: Nourishing happiness

Week 5: Interdependence and community

Week 6: Guidelines for a happier life

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for beginners, as well as those wishing to refresh their mindfulness practice. It is suitable for those of all faiths and none. Our course participants come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of our participants are keen to learn new ways to look after their own well being and to identify positive responses to challenging situations.

Proposed Commitment

For this course to be effective, we recommended that you commit to attending all six session and also do a minimum of 20mins daily practice for five days each week. Creating a stable and strong practice of mindfulness is a habit that needs regular, ideally daily, practice. If you know ahead of time that you can not make a session then please discuss with your Course Leader so that you can understand the content of the missed session. If you have to miss a session at short notice please arrive early for the next session so that you can speak to the Course Leader ahead of time.

Course Schedule

This course is taught over 6 weeks from Monday 11th September to Monday 16th October. Each class is 2 hours long and the class timings are 19.00pm – 21.00pm.

Course Leaders

The course leaders for this course are Vari McLuskie and Linda Downey.

Vari McLuskie

Vari met Thich Nhat Hanh 26 years ago on a retreat and knew that the Plum Village mindfulness tradition was where she felt at home. At that time Vari committed to putting mindfulness practice at the centre of her life. During the time since then Vari has applied mindfulness to all aspects of her life and has experienced first hand the healing and transformational aspects of this practice. Vari has also been teaching mindfulness for over 12 years and is continually inspired by the positive changes that it can bring.

Linda Downey

Meditation has been part of Linda’s life for many years. She discovered the teaching of Thich Nhat Hanh in 2014 and felt inspired by his joyful and practical approach to mindfulness. Embracing this approach has brought her increased happiness and ability to cope with change. She has previously taught meditation to health care professionals and wishes to share the mindfulness teachings with other people so they can choose to experience the joy and healing benefits of this practice. Linda practices with a Sangha in South Shropshire.

What if I miss a class?

It is ideal if you can make all the classes as this way you will gain a sound foundation in mindfulness practice. If you have to miss a class and know ahead of time, do let your course leader know. They will be able to advise you on how you can continue your mindfulness practice by using the online materials provided.

Is there disabled access to the venue?

Yes.The venue is on the ground floor and there is a ramp to the main door.

What further information will I receive?

All our course attendees will receive "Joining Information" once they have booked online in their confirmation email. This will confirm the information on the class timings, venue and facilities.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel your booking at least 7 days before the start of the course we will refund your full course fee minus a £15 administration fee.

If you cancel your booking less than 7 days before the start of the course we will issue a 50% refund of the course fee.

Once the course has started no refunds will be issued.
