What is Be Wild?

Be Wild is a nature-based family club. Leaders provide a novel activity or craft each week, plus resources and opportunities for free play in the woods and by the stream. Popular activities include making dens, bug hunting, hammocks and tree swings and imaginative play. There may also be a campfire.

What ages is it suitable for?

Be Wild is aimed at ages 4 to 11 and activities are chosen to meet the common interests and abilities of this age range. If you want to bring older/younger siblings and they will be participating, they will require a ticket. Children under 2 years, can accompany for free.

Question 3

Is it Forest School?

Be wild is not Forest School but we provide lots of child-led activities and respond to what the children are interested in when we plan the next session. We also offer something different each time, but participating is the child's choice.

Question 4

What is the adults' role?

We encourage you to find a balance of playing together and giving children space to learn through experimentation.  While you may step back at times, to allow them to figure things out, it is your responsibility to supervise your child/ren at all times, and help keep everyone safe.

What should we wear?

Children often want to play in the stream and the forest can be boggy in Autumn, Winter and Spring. Layers of clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, plus wellies are ideal. Waterproofs also keep splashes and wind out. A sun/warm hat for the season is advised.

What else should we bring?

You may want to bring snacks or drinks. In some sessions we may have a campfire, so something that could be toasted on a stick is ideal, just in case (e.g. bread-based). Please bring your own insect repellant, sun cream or regular medication if required. Note: the campfire is occasional!

Are there toilets or baby-change facilities?

At the start and end of the session you will have access to our toilets, including an accessible toilet with baby change table. There are no toilets in the forest, so you may choose to bring a porta-potty or go in the woods. We will not be far from the center if you need to go back and use toilets.

How accessible is the site?

The Hive grounds have tarmac or gravel paths and an accessible toilet. However, the areas of the Forest we use, have no hard surface paths and can become very boggy in wetter months. We have off-road wheelchairs available on request. Please contact us to discuss your needs if you have any concerns.

Question 9

Is there a cafe or shop? Can I bring a picnic?

There is no cafe or shop on site. The nearest eateries are The Owl pub at Lippet's Hill (family-friendly) and options at High Beech (tea hut & The Oak pub). If we have no other groups in, you can stay on site for a picnic until 12:30 but we cannot guarantee this. Toilets will close soon after 12:00.

Is there care parking or public transport?

We have free on-site parking but this is limited so please consider car-sharing. Please park in the white car park bays and avoid blocking gates. We have a cycle rack for your use. The nearest public transport hub is Chingford station: a 3km walk through the Forest on primarily hard-surface tracks.

When shall we arrive?

We advise arriving 10 minutes before the start so you can get dressed into your outdoor clothes and use the toilets. If you are running late, please let us know by calling 0208 508 0611. (We will not be able to wait for you to start the session but we can direct you to where we are.)

Does Be Wild go ahead in bad weather?

Sessions run in most weathers, so please check the forecast and dress appropriately. We only tend to cancel in high winds and we would notify you by email. If we do cancel, you will be offered a refund or exchange event.

Question 13

What if I need to cancel?

Accepted Answer

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your block booking or individual session, we can refund you (minus the booking fee). If you cancel with less than 7 days’ notice, you will be charged in full. We do not offer partial refunds for block bookings but it is cost-effective, even if you miss some.
