Event description

Description

Beach Combing is for young people aged 12-18 interested in creating work inspired by their local environment, who want to slow it down a bit and look closely at the natural world that surrounds their coastal setting. During a course of five daily sessions, 10:00-13:30 from Monday 24 - Friday 28 July 2017, participants will comb the local beach and work with found objects and materials to create an installation at Cove Park to inform drawings, paintings and photography.

Led by artist Celia Pym, Beach Combing will begin with just that, a trip to the beach to collect glass, stones, pebbles and other materials, taking time to look closely with focus and purpose. Returning to Cove Park, participants will play with arrangements, patterns and installations of their finds. Once decided on, the installations will be creatively documented. At the end of Holiday Art Club everything will be returned to the beach in a celebration of what had been found and offered inspiration, taking care to consider our impact when we’re working with nature.

Inspiration for Beach Combing came from Celia’s Craft residency at Cove Park in 2016. Celia made daily trips to the beach amassing an enormous collection of flat smooth black stones, white pebbles and sea glass: some thick, old and worn, some younger and thinner, all in a variety of colours - greens, browns, blues, whites and occasionally some pink glass. The beach trips were a slow thoughtful and rewarding time. Celia loved the way that organizing the glass into colours and size made patterns which she interspersed with the dark and inky when wet, flat black slate.

Celia is an artist who works with textiles. She is interested in the clothes and cloth of others. She likes repairing, mending, arranging, playing and making patterns with what remains from actions on this stuff. Actions like wearing your clothes, dancing costumes into exhaustion, knitting for pleasure without an object goal. She loves the worn down and worn out. Engaged for many years with darning and repair work, Celia aims to make connections through mending between people and their stuff.
