What is Beach Tennis?

  • At the end of the ‘70s on the Adriatic coast in Italy, people began to play with ”wooden rackets" on Beach Volleyball courts. Initially, Beach Tennis was played with a volleyball net, but this was changed in 1996 when the net height was lowered from 2.43m to 1.70m.

  • The game is predominantly played between doubles teams, although singles can be played on a smaller court. The rackets are Paddle bats (no strings), and low compression balls are used.

  • Under and overarm serves are permitted and either member of the receiving team may return the service (mixed doubles, men serve underarm). The scoring is exactly as in regular tennis, with few exceptions, no second serve and at deuce a deciding point is played. A point is won if the ball hits the ground in the opposing court or if the opponents hit the ball out or into the net.

  • Beach Tennis is now played by millions of people around the world. More than 34 nations play this sport including all major European countries.

  • Many National and International competitions are held each year – European Championship, World Team Championship, World Championship, Pan American Championship, Mediterranean Beach Games, and they are gaining popularity.

  • Globally, Italy is the historical leader in Beach Tennis and contributes to the development of Beach Tennis worldwide.
