Event description

Description

Alexia Lazou presents an illustrated talk ‘The Brighton of Aubrey Beardsley’, exploring the buildings and places associated with the artist’s early life. This will be an ‘armchair’ version of Alexia’s walking tour on the same theme. As a boy, Beardsley attended services at the Annunciation, which he particularly favoured during his years in Brighton.

Following the talk there will also be an opportunity to look round ‘the artists’ church’ with writer Stephen Plaice and view the Annunciation exhibition celebrating 150 years at the heart of Hanover (1864-2014).

Founded by Arthur Wagner in 1864 as a mission to the poor at the height of the Oxford Movement, the Church of the Annunciation became the battleground between extreme Protestant anti-ritualists and Catholic Revivalists in the mid-nineteenth century. Come and discover the story of the ‘little church on the hill’, and see the Pre-Raphaelite stained glass of Burne-Jones.

Free admission, donations welcome.

Refreshments will be available and copies of 'The Real Presence', a history of the Annunciation by Stephen Plaice, will be on sale.
