Event description
An international conference on the animal turn in modernist studies.

About this Event

Beastly Modernisms is a two-day interdisciplinary research and creative conference that aims to bring together scholarship from across the arts, and poetry, to engage with the animal turn in modernist studies. Our keynotes will be Kari Weil (Wesleyan University) and Derek Ryan (University of Kent).

We aim to develop our understanding of the animal turn in modernist studies, facilitate knowledge exchange across multiple disciplines, host a poetry reading engaging with the conference theme at the Butterfly and Pig, host a modernist animal-related tour of The Hunterian Museum and consolidate our research group’s interests with an eye towards publication.

Early arrival delegates are welcome to attend complementary tours of the Hunterian Museum's Special Collections on Wednesday 11th September. Please email us (beastlymodernisms@gmail.com) to register interest in advance. After a day of panels on the 12th, there will also be a reading of beastly poetry, featuring commissioned and open call responses from poets including Callie Gardner, Colin Herd, Alec Finlay, Daisy Lafarge and Eva Isherwood Wallace. This event is free to attend and open to the public.

The conference will conclude with a buffet-style vegan dinner at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Sauchiehall Street (at the Saramago Cafe Terrace). Please specify when registering through Eventbrite whether you would like to attend.

Both the conference venue (Kelvin Hall) and CCA are wheelchair accessible, although unfortunately our poetry venue, The Butterfly and Pig, can only be accessed via a staircase.

Bursaries: if you are a postgraduate student based in Scotland attending as a delegate, and would like to be considered for the Scottish Network of Modernist Studies travel bursary please email us to register your interest.
