BEATRIX POTTER: A Winter Tale in Watercolour
Overview
🧵Beatrix Potter: A Winter Story in Watercolour
RECORDING ONLY - Available to watch once booked until the 11th Jan 2026
Taught by Frances Stanfield 🐁
Tutor Frances Stanfield will guide you through Beatrix Potter’s working methods and the visual language that gives her illustrations their clarity and narrative force. We will draw directly from Potter’s studies for The Tailor of Gloucester and explore how she used observation, line, and tonal accents to construct character and atmosphere. Alongside focused drawing exercises, you will look at how Potter worked from nature, how she combined anatomical accuracy with expressive simplification, and how she developed her compositions for print.
The Tailor of Gloucester was Potter’s own favourite book. It was inspired by the true story of a tailor who left a coat unfinished and returned to find the work completed overnight.
“My Dear Freda,
Because you are fond of fairy-tales, and have been ill, I have made you a story all for yourself—a new one that nobody has read before...
Christmas, 1901" - Beatrix Potter
Frances will take you through Beatrix Potter’s art process and how her playful drawings come alive on the page. We will draw from Potter's illustrations and try many other fun drawing exercises which will bring you closer than ever to the magical tale of The Tailor of Gloucester.
