Event description
"I Said it From My Chest and I Don't Care Who I Offend!" – Little Simz

About this event

In this workshop led by Jenny Moore, participants become team players as we work together to search for our beat and build our own chant that says, "I'm here, this is my gang and I know how it goes because it's mine." We'll explore the muscular bonding of locking into rhythm – whether that be through actual beatmaking, breathing, vocalising, or simply throwing a ball against the ground in unison.

Borrowing from feminist methodologies of mutual aid, advocacy and conflict resolution, we'll use what we've got; mutuality, interdependence, misunderstanding, conflict, sheer force, desire, compulsion and joy – to move through actual space (the park) and fantasy space (the song).

Expect some sport-like movement in an outdoor field, stretching and physicality. Expect some personal reflection through writing or talking. Expect some vocal sound-making. Expect to make a chant together through the magic of staying present.

No football experience necessary, no singing experience necessary, just a willingness to engage internally and externally with yourself and others.

Jenny Moore is a composer, singer, drummer, performance artist and choir leader. Her London-based six-piece choral-punk ensemble Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business is known for their tuned percussion, huge vocals and chanted soulful mantras, a mix of the 90's R&B and post-punk Jenny grew up listening to in the Canadian prairies. She founded the alternative feminst choir F*Choir, composing and arranging for the diverse group of singers using non-gendered voice parts, graphic scores, no auditions to create highly energetic, rhythmic and political music.

She's played in bands like the dance-punk trio Charismatic Megafauna and Bas Jan, committed to DIY and collective processes towards making and distributing music, workshops, artworks and performances. She has a monthly radio show on Soho Radio called 'Hitting Things,' and co-founded Bedfellows, a queer feminist sex education project.

Curated by Against the Run of Play, a research group focussed on football and sports culture more broadly. Mixing up spectatorship and participation of art and football, Against the Run of Play aims to champion and empower female fans and players and add to the critical discourse around gender, representation and football culture. Against the Run of Play are Sophie Bownes, Lucy Cowling and Alice Ongaro.
