About this event

The Hunterian invites you to an online event to mark the relaunch of the virtual exhibition Beauty in Hell: Culture in the Gulag.

Beauty in Hell reveals the unique circumstances of Russia's first Gulag, the Solovki Prison Camp, and how the cultural activity of the intelligentsia sentenced there formed a resistance to the systematic violence and oppression which came to define it.  This relaunch will highlight the addition of the image of a cloth sewn by a prisoner of the camp, courtesy of the Sakharov Centre in Moscow.

Irina Flige, Director of the Memorial Research and Information Centre in St. Petersburg will talk at this event.

The virtual exhibition highlights current research by Dr Andrea Gullotta, Lecturer in Russian Studies at the University of Glasgow.

This online event will be recorded.

At the heart of the University of Glasgow since 1807, The Hunterian connects people with stories, individuals and ideas found in stunning collections of objects, belongings and artworks.

Today The Hunterian is a space for questioning and experimentation, for enjoyment and enrichment, for connection and collaboration and for reflecting on the role museums and individuals can play in furthering equity, justice and diversity in our society.

We actively work to make The Hunterian a more relevant and meaningful place – for University students and staff, for Glaswegians, for Scots and for our global visitors.
