This summer the English Civil War is coming to Beckington. Come along and join the action with Sir Thomas Tyldesley’s Regiment of Foote.
For the first weekend in July the world of the past comes to the present in the picturesque Somerset village of Beckington, just off the A36. It's a perfect day trip for families, photographers and history buffs, with onsite catering and a bar.
You will be able to see a fantastic range of historical crafts and military skills, and join in some family fun. This interactive event will be both entertaining and educational, especially for those youngsters at Key stage 2 and 3. You’ll be able to wander around the canvas tented encampment, talking to everyone from the well trained pike soldier, who may let you try on his armour, to the officers and gentlemen passing by.
Smells from the campaign kitchen will fill the air, and the cooks will explain what 17th century people ate, when chocolate was a rarity and no-one ate potatoes.
During the afternoon there will be organised drill displays by the foot-soldiers and the artillery. Experienced pikemen will demonstrate how to handle an 18 foot pike and you will see the regimented musket block honing their skills ready for battle. Then there will be an opportunity for beginners to try their hand with a pike or have a go at firing a replica 17th century musket.
The drums call will tell you when the skirmish is about to begin. The noise of cannon and musket will fill the air as the Royalists challenge the Parliamentarians on the battle field.
