Become an Orchard Leader - with The Merseybank Green Group - Planting Day
Event Information
About this event
We're seeking new Orchard Leaders/Carers for Parkway Playing Fields who are willing to begin a fruitful year with The Orchard Project and Manchester Council as part of their £40,000 investment in community orchards for the borough AKA #TreeActionManchester.
The best bit, this year-long programme is FREE!
Ideally you'll journey with us and over the next twelve months, perhaps even consider becoming a member of the Merseybank Green Group and continuing to improve your local greenspace.
Over six days - mostly weekends, evenings and your own study, you'll learn how to plant, care and celebrate a new community orchard right on your doorstep. As an individual, family or with a group of friends.
Kicking off on Saturday 1st May we'll begin with a planting day as we've already hosted a community consultation and decided our planting location, see the screenshot below for varieties.
In subsequent days you'll learn how to:
- Propagate fruit trees through the not-so-dark-art of grafting
- Get an introduction to our accredited training course in community orchard management.
- Help to put on a family-friendly event this summer, once lockdown restrictions have eased.
- Co-host an 'Apple Day' (on or near October 21st)
- Learn how to prune and care for fruit trees.
- Take part in a traditional 'Wassail' celebration. Not sure what a Wassail is? Think of it as an orchard blessing CLICK HERE to find out more.
- Anyone joining our year-long programme will be invited to other related events organised by Merseybank Green Group and the other Manchester planting venues that have taken part in the #TreeActionManchester campaign.
Priority will be given to those who have little or no previous gardening or community planting experience. So if that sounds like you please register your interest. We'll ask you a few questions as part of the ticket checkout process and a member of our team will get back to you if you have been chosen to take part.
The programme is open to individuals, families or a group of friends in a 'bubble' can register as a group.
One member of your group must be over 18.
All events will adhere to current government Covid measures and will be updated accordingly. If you have any questions email dan@theorchardorchardproject.org.uk.
