About this event

  • 1 hour

Steampunk fuses art, technology and history, and necessitates multi-directional, divergent or opposite thinking. The art form’s complex nature is key to improving one’s approach to design. Albert Rothenberg, a psychiatrist who studied the creative process, called this approach “Janusian Thinking.” The concept is named after the Roman god Janus, who is depicted with two heads facing opposite directions and represents the middle ground between concrete and abstract dualities. Rothenberg discovered that great problem solvers, inventors and innovators focused on a problem in the present, while also looking to the past and future, all at the same time.

Steampunk art and design at its core fuses opposites of Past and Present/Future; Form and Function; Art and Science; Human and Machine; and Mechanical and Botanical.

Bruce Rosenbaum employs Janusian Thinking in all his art and designs and he will help to give you insights to use opposite thinking in your passions, work and life.

SPEAKER –BRUCE ROSENBAUM

Bruce Rosenbaum has been dubbed the Steampunk Guru by the Wall Street Journal and Steampunk Evangelist by Wired Magazine. Bruce’s functional Steampunk artwork has been featured in the Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, CNN, NPR and featured on MTV, A&E, HGTV and Netflix.
Bruce’s company, ModVic, works with clients all across the world to take period, repurposed, personal and meaningful objects, and creatively infuse them with modern technology to transform the ordinary into incredible Steampunk functional placemaking art. The Steampunk art and design process celebrates history, while setting a path for a reimagined better future — telling the personal stories of objects, individuals, buildings, organizations and places.
Bruce’s Steampunkinetics workshops also builds art and history into science helping to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Math) and creative problem solving skills for atypical and neurotypical children and adults.
