Mid-Career Conversations for Historians: ‘Becoming a mentor for departmental colleagues’

The Royal Historical Society is pleased to announce a new series of informal, discussion-based events for historians at mid-career. Please note: this event and the wider series are reserved for those who are current members of the Royal Historical Society.

The new series -- 'Mid-Career Conversations for Historians' -- is an opportunity for historians in UK HE to meet and discuss topics of particular relevance to them at mid-career.

The third Conversation takes place at 11am, Friday 16 June 2023, on the theme of ‘Becoming a mentor for departmental colleagues’. In this session we welcome historians at UK HEIs who are taking on mentorship roles for colleagues, often for the first time in their careers.

As with all Conversations, the subjects discussed are brought by the attendees. However, possible topics for discussion in this particular session may include:

Learning how to become an effective mentor at mid-career
The boundaries and scope of mentorship
Working with, and learning from, junior colleagues
The qualities of good mentorship, and the problems that can arise
Ongoing mentoring for those at mid-career

'Conversations' will be limited to c.20 mid-career historians per session to enable everyone to speak and exchange experience and ideas. The size of each Conversation means it may not be possible to offer places to all those who wish to attend. We will confirm attendance by Friday 2 June 2023 at the latest. We also seek to cater for those unable to attend at subsequent 'Mid-Career Conversations' which we'll be hosting through the year.

This and subsequent Conversations will be hosted by Professor Julian Wright, the Royal Historical Society's Secretary for Professional Engagement, who'll be joined by Dr Kate Bradley (University of Kent) to share their experience of this topic.

Our next Conversation (Friday 22 September 2023) will consider the subject of ‘Engaging with other disciplines in your research and teaching’.
