Event description

Description

The course is aimed at those who are considering beekeeping as a hobby. We will introduce you to beekeeping, giving you the skills and confidence to begin to manage your own bees with sympathy and understanding. The course for beginners comprises five classroom sessions held fortnightly on a Thursday evening, followed by two practical apiary sessions held on Sunday mornings.

What we will cover

The course starts with five fortnightly evening classes, held in our classroom at the Honey Farm from 7pm - 9pm, starting in early February. Through themed discussions, using many visual aids and pieces of equipment, we will explore what is involved in beekeeping, how to start, and the basic requirements of time, space, and equipment.

As the bees become active, the course moves from the classroom to the apiary, and you will try beekeeping for yourself, giving you time to become familiar with working with a hive and with honey bees. Our teaching apiary is sited in the meadow adjacent to the farm buildings.

What to bring

The course fee includes a copy of the well-respected BBKA Guide to Beekeeping which is yours to keep, and we will refer to this throughout. We will be providing handouts to summarise each session, but you may wish to bring pen and paper to add your own notes.

For the practical sessions, please bring jeans and a long sleeved top (but avoid woollen or fluffy outer layers), and boots or wellies. We will provide beekeeping clothing and gloves.

Venue

The event takes place at our purpose-built Honey Farm in the beautiful East Devon countryside. We are just two miles from the coast (as the bee flies) and are sited within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Honey Farm has a tea room with gardens, orchards, and a 24 acre wildflower meadow to explore. We have a dedicated classroom and a teaching apairy on site. Light refreshments are provided during the sessions.

We are a father & son team with over 50 years of combined beekeeping experience. We both hold the National Diploma in Beekeeping (the highest qualification available) and are tutors and examiners for the British Beekeepers Association. We have operated a commercial beekeeping business in Devon since the 1970’s.

We breed our bees to be generally docile and well-behaved, however there is always the chance of a sting during the apiary sessions. We would not recommend this course for anyone who suffers a severe reaction to insect bites or stings (anaphylaxis).
