Description

BEER BOARS EAST LONDON - GROUP BREW 03.

BARREL AGED RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT WITH BEER & DESSERT TASTINGS

After two sold out group brewing sessions with Beavertown & Redchurch / Urban Farmhouse this will be our first collective club effort involving Aegir (see below), our recently purchased 225 litre Malt Whiskey barrel. Used just once beforehand the barrel still retains a lot of its malt whiskey character and will impart subtle oak flavours to the beer. The Russian Imperial Stout will age for six months at which point we will gather to rack the beer into 750ml bottles. But dont worry you dont have to bring a brew to come - feel free to join us on the night for some serious beer & dessert pairings!

WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE BREW? We are asking each brewer to bring either 10 or 20 litres of Russian Imperial Stout (brewed following the recipe below as closely as possible) to the Adam & Eve pub on Thursday 18th May. Each batch will be tasted and tested for any potential infection. We will then rack each batch into Aegir (who will be steam cleaned beforehand to ensure no unwanted bacteria are present). A week prior to racking we will roll the barrel with 1.5 litres of whiskey to refresh the staves and help sterilise the barrel.

Each 10 litre contribution will yield 12 bottles (with an allowance for wastage). We will aim to have the beers ready for Christmas!

Recipe*: https://beerandbrewing.com/alexander-the-blessed-recipe/

* Please note the recipe above is for 6 gallons (22.7l). To convert to 10 litres divide each volume by 2.27 - to convert to 20 litres divide each volume by 1.13

We are going to follow the recipe 'Alexander The Blessed' from Neil Fisher on Beer & Brewing Magazine. B&B is a great resource for Barrel Aging info for homebrewers. The high alcohol helps get the full flavour from the barrel. High IBUs help balance the 'boozy sweetness of the whiskey'.

AEGIR - Beer Boars first 225 litre Malt Whiskey barrel - purchased from 40ft Brewery after housing their spectacular Deepest Stout. After this second Imperial Stout outing he will be turned over to the dark side and used for Sour Beers.

Aegir, the Norse god of the sea, is regarded in the deity realm as one of mythology’s most hospitable gods. Thor, gifted Aegir with a mile-deep cauldron brimming with ale for use during annual banquets for the gods. With a cauldron of that substantial size, many honorable gods in Norse mythology would gather at Aegir’s golden sanctuary at the bottom of the sea during the winter months and partake in his neverending supply of perfectly crafted ale. Aegir is known for not only his hospitality but putting any host to shame by providing a literal “bottomless keg” that instantly replenishes mugs upon draining. In fact, so much beer is enjoyed by his guests that the white froth seen atop waves is attributed to Aegir’s massive parties.

- HOMEBREW TASTING: Please feel free however to bring a few bottles of any homebrews you have made for everyone to try and hopefully give you feedback! We will provide a bottle or two of our own brews to get the party started but please note that all other beers must be purchased from the bar.

Email beerboars@gmail.com for more info and feel free to invite any budding brewers who may enjoy learning about brewing.
