I think Coronavirus reminided man of us how much we love the pub. Sometimes, you only really appreciate something when it's taken away from you. Being back inside pubs this last week has been like coming home.
There are many guidebooks to pubs. Why did I feel the need to write another one? Because the most important aspect of a pub is not the decor, the menu or the beer list. It's the atmosphere, the way it feels, the extension of the personalities of the people who run it.
The pubs in this book are often beatiful to look at, and most sell good beer. But they're here because of their atmosphere. Driving around the country visiting these pubs was the most fun I've had researching a book, and as pubs have reopened post-pandemic, it's led to me being interviewed by journalists from all around the world. There's no better time to revisit it, five years after publication, and chat about what makes pubs so special.
Fancy a drink whiile we chat? Working once again with Best of British Beer, we wanted to put together an evocation of the typical range of beers and ciders you might find on the bar in a pub anywhere in the UK. What’s really nice here is that rather than plumping for the main brands, we’ve found lagers, stouts, best bitters and ciders as well as a range of typical ales, all brewed by small British brewers. So it’s quite like the the range you’d find in a typical pub, only better.
