Event description

Description

For the last two years, Sheffield Music Academy has performed a community choral piece at the Sheffield Cathedral, starting with Haydn’s Creation in 2016 and Mozart’s Requiem last year. Both events have proved such a success that this year we are performing another classic choral work, Beethoven’s Mass in C again welcoming singers from Sheffield’s rich musical community to join us.

Beethoven composed his Mass in C Op. 86 for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II in 1807 who, until Haydn's declining health prevented it, had commisioned Haydn to compose a piece annually for his wife's name day.

The first performance of the Mass did not go well, with the Prince referring to it as 'ridiculous and detestable' however today it is generally considered an under-rated and under-performed masterpiece.

Now is your chance to hear it!

The nucleus of the choir will be made up of Sheffield Music Academy students, parents, staff and alumni; accompanied by a professional orchestra consisting of SMA staff and alumni, and professional soloists.

Conducted by the very experienced and inspirational choral conductor John Grundy who founded Sheffield Music Academy in 2006.

The Concert will also feature a variety of performances from our Junior, Intermediate and Senior student groups with a vibrant mix of repertoire in its first half.
