WELCOME TO MY 2024 COLLECTION OF EVENTS

IT WILL SOON BE SPRING SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SKILLS TO GET OUT ON THE FELLS AND ENJOY YOURSELVES.

BY REQUEST - THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERYONE - ALL GENDERS

This event is aimed at absolute beginners, less than absolute beginners in fact.

On a beginners course, we start with the start with the basics to give you initial confidence to get you out on the hills; of course, you will still want to have your GPS with you but after the course, you will be ready to really ‘read’ your map and not just look at it.

If any of the following ring true, then this could be the course for you!

• Do you park up, all excited for a days walk and then take a sneaky look at your GPS to find a path or direction that you want to walk? Sometimes just getting out of a car park can be a challenge! Its happened to us all !

• Are you ok to find North on your Map and then align this with North on your compass, ..... or just a bit shaky with what this even means?

• Are you ok to orientate your map to your surroundings and the direction you want to go it ? ('Orientate' sounds abit jargonish I know, not my style at all, but do you hold your map the right way round to help you go in the right direction?)

• Do you love (....and I mean really really, really love!) your compass and know why its critical to be able to use this rather than just follow your GPS? Or would you secretly rather ignore it ? Does it even come out your ruck sack ?

• Do you know the difference between various types of paths whether they are green dots or black dots or anything for that matter?

• Ever been caught with out with the sun going down and started to panic as you don’t want to get caught in the dark in case you can’t then find your way back?

• Worse still, ever started to panic when the battery on your phone is starting to die and you need it to cross check your location? This is intended to be a very practical course that we do out on the hills , just in the region of 7km, with circa 400m of ascent & descent.

Our goal is the following, so that when packing up your day rucksack, this time you reach for your map and compass as a priority as you will know what to do with it !! We will learn:

• Orientating your map to the land around you

• Understanding & using your compass at all times

• Reading your map ‘Legend' and realising that a legend is not just Elvis Presley, Ed Sheeran or anyone else for that matter!

• Understanding distances, how to measure them and how they then look on the land; we will also cover types of maps, what is a 1:25 or 1:50 map, why do we refer to OL4, OL5,6,7 in the Lakes

• Applying distances and understanding how long it takes us to walk a certain distance

This course will naturally lead you on the Intermediate course whereby you will then consolidate learning, test your learning, understand all those little brown lines on the map (Contours and grow even more confidence so that if the mist comes down, there is no need to panic!

Places are £50.00 per person + EVENTBRITE FEES. You can also PM me direct for links to payment or drop me a note from my website.https://www.gingerroutes.co.uk/navigation-courses

Hello there and welcome to GingerRoutes. I am Nicola (the one with lots of ginger hair, just check the pictures for evidence!!) and a MTA qualified Mountain Leader.

I am privileged to live in Cumbria so this means the fells are my play ground. I have ben walking for some 40+ years at least. Currently I am 54yrs !! Of course, I haven't walked all that time as life takes over with family, children jobs etc but the hills have always been my passion any parents will vouch that I was born wearing walking boots on, and my daughter will voucher that she was also born with walking boots on well, but she insisted on taking them off at about age 16yrs much to my disappointment.

I host a range of WOMEN ONLY events, be that private guiding, group walks, hill skills/courses or wild camping experiences. My focus is ensuring that the walks cater to all levels of capabilities and fitness to ensure a great day out. Many, in-fact most, at least 85%, join my events alone, not knowing anyone but leave the event with a new set of walking buddies, friends or a new network.

Please don't think that you need to be a super trained athlete to enjoy the hills, far from it, of course some fitness is required, but it is far more important in my view, to have a passion to want to get outdoors and breathe the fresh air. Certainly that is how I started!
