Event description

Description

PLEASE NOTE: The event has proved very popular so we have scheduled another workshop at the same venue on 27 January 2018. Bookings are already coming in so please act early to secure a spot. Here's a link to the booking page

Do you love the night sky? But do you also feel a bit lost in space? Want to learn how to use a telescope, or take a simple picture of the night sky? Then we have an event just for you. We are running a 3 hour stargazing workshop aimed at beginners. We'll show you how to identify the constellations and brighter stars and locate amazing objects. Feel free to bring along your own telescopes and cameras, but we'll have a wide range of equipment for you to use. Weather permitting we’ll also stage a star party taking you on a tour of the heavens and keep a sharp look out for Geminid meteors. This is by far the best shooting star shower of the year and peaks on this night! If it's clear it should be wonderful. The cost is £16 per person including refreshments and we’ll be happy to answer follow up questions. Suitable for adults and young people over 12. Wrap up warm. Event picture by Rob Ince. Date: 13 December 2017. Venue Bainbridge Village Hall.

Yorkshire Dales

The night sky above the national park is one of the darkest in England and Bainbridge has low levels of light pollution, whilst also providing an accessible location..

Gudies

Your guides for the evening will be astronomers Richard Darn and Dave Williams. Richard was part of the team that achieved designation of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and helped launch Kielder Observatory. He advises the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks on dark sky conservation and has appeared on BBC Sky at Night and Stargazing Live and has regular BBC radio slots. For more visit https://darkskiesuk.org

Dave is a renowned astro-photographer with a gift for helping beginners capture their own image of the night sky. One of his pictures won the prestigious top prize at the International Astronomy Show and he's currently working with a simple camera on a tripod to produce amazing widefield views of the heavens. He is a regular speaker at novice stargazing events.
