Drypoint Printmaking Workshop with Ellie James Printmaker

Join local artist and printmaker Ellie for a full-day creative workshop where you'll get hands-on with the expressive and tactile technique of drypoint printmaking. This session is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to try a new printmaking process in a friendly and relaxed setting.

You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of drypoint, a traditional intaglio method that involves scratching into a printing plate to create richly textured, atmospheric prints. We’ll explore a range of mark-making techniques, from bold lines to subtle shading, and look at how painterly effects can be introduced through inking and printing.

Throughout the day, you’ll experiment on a test plate, trying out different tools and textures, before moving on to create a new plate for your finished drypoint print using your own source material.

What we will cover:

  • An introduction to the drypoint printmaking process and the tools involved
  • Creating a test plate to explore line, texture, tone, and painterly effects
  • Inking and wiping techniques to build contrast and atmosphere
  • Printing your image using an etching press
  • Producing a final print based on your chosen subject or inspiration

Inspiration & Materials:

A range of inspirational materials will be provided, but you’re also encouraged to bring your own ideas and references. This could be:

  • Photographs of landscapes, buildings, or animals
  • Drawings you’ve done or sketches you'd like to work from
  • Still life objects, flowers, or any physical items you’d like to use as a starting point

Be prepared to get inky and enjoy the creative mess! All tools and materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with your own drypoint prints, test plate, and the knowledge to keep exploring at home.

Skill Level: Suitable for beginners, no prior experience necessary.

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
