Beginner's Improv Comedy Class
Wed 5 July 2017, 18:00 – 21:00 BST
This is an 8 week improv course that will take place every Wednesday 6pm-9pm.
This course is great for anyone who is yet to experience a structured improv learning environment, anyone who wants to try something new and build confidence, and those who are performers that are interested in adding the craft of improv to their skillset.
No experience in performing or comedy is necessary to sign up for this course.
What Will Be Covered
Many useful skills of improvisation will be covered, including:
- Good Listening skills
- Stagecraft and stage presence
- Finding a stage persona specific to you, something you can use anywhere from the stage to work/corporate presentations
- Basic character creation
- Understanding some of the main principles of comedy
- Letting go of your self-criticism
What You will be Doing in the Sessions
In class you’ll take part in exercises and games that will encourage you to be less critical of both yourself and others. Through this you will free up the creative side of your mind in a way that makes you more confident and less likely to freeze up in the spotlight (in performance, presentation, or otherwise). As well, these activities will introduce you to and reinforce many improvisation principles.
At the very end of the course you’ll be offered the (optional) opportunity to perform with your classmates in one of ImproQuo’s monthly shows, giving you the chance to put your new skills to good use straight away in front of a small, chilled audience. And if you’ve ever considered performing regularly, there is also the opportunity to be casted in a new improv team in which you can perform with on a regular basis.
What You’ll Get Out of the Course
By the end of the course you will be much less critical of yourself and much better at being present it the moment. You may even find that ideas come more readily to you both in conversation with others and from within. You will also gain a basic understanding of scene and character work for the comedy stage, and you will have played a variety of improv games which you can take with you anywhere.
