
Beginners Knitting (mini course)
Overview
Our Beginners Knitting classes have been specifically developed to meet the needs of those wishing to take the first step into the world of knitting. These classes will not only introduce you to the fundamentals of knitting but also to practical advice on yarns, needles and pattern reading.
The classes are taught by Barley Massey, who will watch over your learning with care, offer feedback/observations and answer your questions as they arise!
Part 1: Saturday 3rd January, 2:30 - 5pm (Please arrive promptly)
- Understand the relationship between wool and needle sizes
- Make a Slip knot, use ‘thumb’ and ‘knitting on’ methods of casting on.
- Complete a plain & purl stitch.
- Introduce a new ball of wool or new colour
- Create stripes and possibly some other 2 colour patterns!
Homework: Carry on with your sampler to build confidence and rhythm.
Part 2: Saturday 10th January, 2:30 - 5pm
- Refresh on skills from Part 1
- Understand how to combine plain & purl stitch to create new stitches, eg: stocking stitch, ribbing and moss stitch.
- Read simple texture patterns.
- Simple increasing and decreasing methods to create shaping.
- How to cast off and sew in ends neatly and securely.
Homework: - Get advice and start a simple project!
A starter kit and yarn are included. There will also be some simple worksheets.
All attendees also receive 10% discount on yarns purchased for your own projects on class days.
About the Tutor: The class is taught by Barley Massey - a life long maker, passionate about creative reuse and encouraging others into the joys of making, remaking and mending. Barley used to work in costume for film & TV before establishing "Fabrications" on Broadway Market 25 years ago. She is an experienced tutor, aiming to build student's self confidence and knowledges. She teaches a regular programme at Fabrications as well as with other organisations and at events.
Class Size: Max 8 students
Where: The class will take place in Fabrications "Re Imaginerium" studio (we no longer have a shop cat as depicted in one of the photos!) which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps. The studio is light and bright with a homely feel to help you feel relaxed and inspired whilst learning. You will have your own work area (with some shared facilities like ironing, cutting table) We purposefully keep class sizes small to ensure a quality experience and plenty of guidance time with the tutor.
Please Note: There is no food or drink in the studio or shop, You are welcome to bring a sealed water bottle but please ensure all 'take outs' are consumed before arriving.
