Learn to Sing - from scratch (and have loads of fun in the process) - with Mags Lowe from Singing UK

"It’s so addictive! I can’t express just how much I’ve enjoyed the course and how much confidence it has given me... [I have] a much greater understanding and appreciation of my vocal ability and the confidence to take up those 1:1 private lessons and to join a local community choir, and who knows maybe even brave the odd solo! ….you have truly given me the courage to sing.” Jennie

I've been supporting people to find and develop their singing voices and build their confidence for years; it's my passion and I would love to welcome you onto this workshop whatever your past singing experiences or current level of ability.

I will teach you the basics of:

  • breathing for singing,
  • posture,
  • group singing,
  • holding long notes
  • how to change the tone of your voice by exploring voice qualities,
  • how to improve your power and range (how high and how low you can sing),
  • voice projection; and
  • harmony singing (if you feel ready for it; if not, you can sing the main tune).

I create the supportive, "safe" space for you to explore your voice without fear of being "exposed" - there are no unexpected solo moments but equally, if you are ready for them then there will be opportunities. Be reassured that everyone in the group is at a similar level and will have similar needs. There is a maximum group size of 20.

This workshop is suitable for:

  • complete beginners,
  • people who feel very nervous about singing in front of anyone (the beauty of group singing is that we have "one" voice)
  • people who may think or have been told by someone that they are tone-deaf,
  • people who who love to join a choir but feel they need some singing know-how before they make that step,
  • choir members who haven't had any singing lessons and would like to learn good singing technique to improve their confidence and ability to contribute to the choir,
  • rusty singers who feel out of practice and want to go over the basics.

Level 1 can be repeated as many times as you like as repetition will help to consolidate your learning. When you are ready, you may like to progress onto Level 2 or to take private singing lessons or pursue another singing goal.

I think my student John sums up really well what you might get out of taking this exciting and courageous step bycoming on the Level 1 Beginners' Workshop:

“Having never sang before I met Mags 4 years ago at a spur of the moment taster session. Mags’s passion for singing and relaxed teaching style rubbed off on me and made me come back for more and I haven’t looked back since. I now sing in a choir and a barbershop Acapella group as well as regular top up private lessons to fine tune my voice… none of which would have happened had I not met Mags on that Saturday afternoon in the sun!! I would highly recommend for anyone to let Mags help them on their singing journey whether your ultimate goals are to sing better in the shower or to sing on stage in front of thousands…she will help you bring out the best you have inside you.John (Oct 2015)

It will probably be one of the best things you'll ever do. If you need any more reasons to come and do Level 1 then consider that singing in a group:

  • is brilliant for our health and wellbeing,
  • gives us a natural high,
  • is instantly bonding
  • is loads of fun!

Expectations - what Beginners Level 1 group learning offers:

Learning in a group offers the chance to learn singing technique at a lower cost than for private lessons. The session aims to provide clear information, a demonstration and then practical application of core singing techniques - we will all try the techniques together. There will be opportunities for a few people to have a "masterclass" moment with me if desired, whereby we troubleshoot an issue they are having. Each time you attend a Level 1 session you will take in more of the information and get more guided practical experience to keep you on track and to fine-tune your technique so repetition is highly recommended.

AUDIO (not video) recording of the session is strongly recommended - bring your phone/tablet or a recording device so that you can listen back and repeat the session at your leisure.

And you are welcome to contact me with questions after the event if you need extra support with your technique.
