Use the “jigsaw” method to create a print in two-three colours, and explore how to create shapes and patterns with carved lines.

Linocut is a relief printing method using linoleum or rubber sheet. “Jigsaw” printing is a method of easily printing multiple colours simultaneously by cutting the block into separate pieces.

This workshop will focus on creating simple but effective shapes with bold colours and patterns.

Due to a generous grant, we are able to offer 1 free Community Collaboration place to applicants with Innerleithen or Walkerburn postcodes. To apply, email us with a bit of information about yourself (smails@nts.org.uk) by the 30th of August. Applications will be confirmed 7 days before the course date.

Morning10am – 12.30pm

Brief tutorial followed by time to cut your own blocks. Proof your designs using printing methods that require little equipment or things you have at home. Separate the blocks into up to three pieces for different colours.

Afternoon

1.30pm – 4pm

Take turns at printing copies of your designs using our hand presses. These are designed for letterpress printing, however they work well for relief printing as well. Learn how to clean up printing inks!

Output

· 1 finished block (in 2-3 parts), 1 practice stamp

· Proofs printed by hand

· At least one finished print of your design

· Advice and information on printmaking papers, tools, and presses or press-less printing

Accessibility

· One of the work spaces is upstairs and is not wheelchair accessible

· Linocut requires some manual dexterity and hand strength, using sharp tools

· The hand presses can only be operated standing up, however they don’t require much upper body strength, and you will be taking turns and so can rest in between prints

Dogs

We are unable to allow dogs inside the museum, except for assistance dogs.
