Are you aged 16-30? This is your chance to try pyrography with the SWI’s skilled tutor, Helen Bissett. Pyrography, derived from two Greek words meaning fire writing, is another name for what is more widely known as poker work: the art or craft of burning into the surface of a suitable material such as wood, leather, cork or velvet.

Pyrography has been practiced since the discovery of fire itself: heating a piece of metal in a fire and decorating eating utensils, storage containers, combs, toys. Today most people work with electricity, using a soldering iron, hot wire, or solid point.

All materials will be supplied, and there will be free refreshments during the workshop. As this is part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project, we are also able to cover your travel costs. Attendance is for young women, aged 16-30, and places are limited to 12.

For free SWI events, there is no cancellation fee. However, we kindly request that cancellations be made either through Eventbrite or by contacting us directly at hello@theswi.org.uk for assistance with cancellation.
