About this event
Our Beginners Sewing Course is an introduction into machine sewing and has been developed to address the needs of those who have little or no experience of using a sewing machine. Through these classes participants will learn not only basic sewing machine skills, but will develop the confidence to progress onto making things for themselves using a sewing machine.
Beginners Sewing 1 - introduction to using a sewing machine: Wednesday 15th October, 6:30 - 9:30pm (Please arrive promptly)
On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:
- thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin.
- feed fabric through, sew in a straight line and turn corners.
- explore the range of features and stitches on the machine.
- trouble shoot about common errors and being aware of them!
- sew different types of seams.
- Understand how to hem the edge of the cloth.
- apply a pocket and patches.
Includes: Our 'Learn to Sew' textile handout (T-Towel) , other materials, use of 'Brother' sewing machines.
Beginners Sewing 2 - zips, buttonholes & bindings (and make a utility roll): Wednesday 22nd October, 6:30 - 9:30pm
- Understand how to use different accessories that accompany domestic sewing machines, such as zipper, buttonhole feet.
- Stitch different sizes and styles of buttonholes.
- 2 ways of attaching a zip (visible and covered)
- Apply a bias binding to embellish and finish a raw edge.
- Create your own stylish ‘Utility Roll’ (suitable for your sewing notions, make up, pencils/brushes etc)
Includes: Pre prepared 'Utility Roll' component materials , thread, use of 'Brother' sewing machines.
Beginners Sewing 3 - Pockets: Wednesday 29th October, 6:30 - 9:30pm
- Be introduced to a range of pocket styles
- Patch Pocket: unlined, self-lined, “kangaroo” style, reinforcing methods
- Hip Pocket: angled or straight, how to insert a pocket bag
- Welt or Jet style Pocket: tailored finish, usually found on waistcoats and trousers
- Create your own stylish tote style bag with multiple pockets!
Includes: Pre prepared component materials for your tote bag , thread, use of 'Brother' sewing machines.
About the Tutor: The class is taught by Barley Massey - a life long "sewist", passionate about creative reuse and encouraging others into the joys of making, remaking and mending. Barley used to work in costume for film & TV before establishing "Fabrications" on Broadway Market 25 years ago. She is an experienced tutor, aiming to build student's self confidence and knowledges. She teaches a regular programme at Fabrications as well as with other organisations and at events.
Time: 6:30 - 9:30pm
Where: The class will take place in Fabrications "Re Imaginerium" studio (we no longer have a shop cat as depicted in one of the photos!) which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps. The studio is light and bright with a homely feel to help you feel relaxed and inspired whilst learning. You will have your own work area (with some shared facilities like ironing, cutting table) We purposefully keep class sizes small to ensure a quality experience and plenty of guidance time with the tutor.
Class Size: Max 8 students
Please Note: The workshop will take place in the Fabrications studio (which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps)
There is no food or drink allowed in the studio, You are welcome to bring a sealed water bottle but please ensure all 'take outs' are consumed before arriving. For full day classes there is a scheduled lunch break.

Frequently asked questions
We use 'Brother' LX25 sewing machines (top loading bobbin) which are regularly serviced and tested. The knowledge and techniques taught are suitable for all sewing machine models. If you'd like to still use your own sewing machine, you must contact us directly, in advance of the class to arrange.
There are no food and drinks permitted in Fabrications shop and studio. You are welcome to bring a re sealable drinks bottle.
Please arrive promptly for class, ideally 5 mins before, we have a lot of content to work through. If you are experiencing transport issues please contact us on 020 7275 8043 or 07958 424 808 . If you just turn up late, you may be refused entry, it's diruptive and unfair on the rest of the group.
The first evening is the foundation class. The ideal is to complete the course at the time! However there is some flexibility to re schedule class 2 or 3 to another date, but only if space permits on that month's course. You will be added to a waiting list and contacted once the course has started.
All materials are provided and pre prepared ready to sew with each evening!
We are open to teens attending this course. However, please get in touch or visit Fabrications before booking, so we can meet the young person and guage if the class will be appropriate at this time.
The classes take place in Fabrications studio, which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps. If you are able to use stairs, there is a mezzanine area where you can tuck away your wheelchair. Please get in touch before booking to discuss any accomodations.
Our classes are non refundable. There is a link to our full Booking T&C's in the description. If you contact us giving enough notice we may be able to transfer you to another date. If we are able to fill your place we will always offer an alternative, but this is isn't guaranteed.
