About this event
In this class you will learn basic Shibori stitching techniques that provide the perfect introduction to the ancient Japanese craft of sewn Shibori resist dyeing. Stitch combinations will also be demonstrated to show how pattern possibilities can be extended. You will also experience dyeing your samples in an indigo dye vat.
On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:
- Have an understanding of key stitching techniques used in Shibori
– Tie the quilters knot and the surgeons knot required for all stitched work
– Sew the three basic stitches of shibori:
- nui (running stitch)
- ori nui (teeth stitch)
- maki nui (twist stitch)
– Combine shibori stitches to create different pattern variations
– Create Mokume (woodgrain) Shibori
- Set up an indigo dye bath and how to get different shades of this lovely blue (indigo is a natural dye)
- Unpick your finished work to reveal your designs
The class is aimed at beginners but any and all levels are welcome!
In the afternoon, Rob is offering a second Beginners Shibori class which focusses on binding methods to create designs. We offer a discount when booking the full day!
About the Tutor: This class is taught by Rob Jones, a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan.
Class Size: 6 students
Time: 10:30am - 1:30pm
Where: The class will take place in Fabrications "Re Imaginerium" studio (we no longer have a shop cat as depicted in one of the photos!) which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps. The studio is light and bright with a homely feel to help you feel relaxed and inspired whilst learning. You will have your own work area (with some shared facilities like dye baths and sink for rinsing) We purposefully keep class sizes small to ensure a quality experience and plenty of guidance time with the tutor.
Class includes: All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
Please Bring: Your own rubber gloves (washing up style)
We will provide shirts to wear but please avoid wearing your favourite clothes and shoes!
Please Note: There is no food or drink allowed in the studio, You are welcome to bring a sealed water bottle but please ensure all 'take outs' are consumed before arriving. For full day classes there is a scheduled lunch break.

Frequently asked questions
There are no food and drinks allowed into Fabrications shop and studio. You are welcome to bring a re sealable drinks bottle and there will be a planned lunch break for all full day classes. Bring your own packed lunch or Broadway Market has a wealth of cafe's and food stalls to choose from.
Please arrive promptly for class, ideally 5 mins before, we have a lot of content to work through. If you are experiencing transport issues please contact us on 020 7275 8043 or 07958 424 808 . If you just turn up late, you may be refused entry, it's diruptive and unfair on the rest of the group.
Most of our classes include materials, but please check the "Class Includes" or "What to Bring" in the events description. Bring your own rubber gloves (washing up style) for the Indigo dye bath. We will provide shirts to wear but please avoid wearing your favourite clothes and shoes!
We welcome Teens upwards for this class. However, please get in touch or visit Fabrications before booking, so we can meet the young person and guage if the class will be appropriate at this time.
The classes take place in Fabrications studio, which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps. If you are able to use stairs, there is a mezzanine area where you can tuck away your wheelchair. Please get in touch before booking to discuss any accomodations.
Our classes are non refundable. There is a link to our full Booking T&C's in the description. If you contact us giving enough notice we may be able to transfer you to another date. If we are able to fill your place we will always offer an alternative, but this is isn't guaranteed.
