What will I learn?
In this class you will learn basic shibori stitching techniques that provide the perfect introduction to the ancient Japanese craft of sewn Shibori resist dyeing. Stitch combinations will also be demonstrated to show how pattern possibilities can be extended.
Content:– How to tie the quilters knot and the surgeons knot required for all stitched work– How to sew the three basic stitches of shibori:
- nui (running stitch)
- ori nui (teeth stitch)
- maki nui (twist stitch)
– How to combine shibori stitches to create different pattern variations
– How to create Mokume (woodgrain) Shibori

Duration: 3 hours
Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill.
What do I need to provide myself?
- Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)
- A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
- An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)
All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
