Ready to get your hands dirty and unleash your creativity? Join us for a fun and hands-on beginners throwing course at Llanover Hall Arts Centre! This one-day event is perfect for those looking to learn the art of pottery throwing from scratch. Don't miss this opportunity to try something new and explore your artistic side. Sign up now!

This course will give you the opportunity to learn how to throw with clay and is run by experienced potter/sculptor Barry Akins, who will guide you through the basics, helping you create your very own masterpiece to take home. Don't miss this opportunity to try something new and explore your artistic side. Sign up now!

The course will include:

Clay preparation/ demonstration of throwing, centring the clay/ making a hollow/ pulling up sides.

Turning /trimming pots demonstration.

Applying decoration slips to thrown pots.

During the course you will be given hand-outs that cover all the different aspects of throwing and which are yours to keep.

The emphasis is on learning the technique of throwing, so you have a solid foundation, if you would like to progress with throwing in the future, rather than producing a quantity of work.

The price includes the glazing and firing of 3 pots. The pots will be available for collection one month after the course was run – further details to be advised.

Each student will have their own wheel for use throughout the day. Basic materials, tools and tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch.

Barry Akins has over 30 years’ worth of experience, including 5 years as the potter in St Fagan’s Museum of Welsh Life and 10 years as a sculptor working in clay for many leading London institutions. He now runs his own successful business based in Cardiff. Barry also has a great deal of experience as a teacher and works for many local organisations within this role.
