Event description
Behaviour Change Symposium

About this Event

Learn how behaviour change techniques and principles can be applied to a wide range of campaigns and scenarios facing communications practitioners today.

The day, organised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations' Local Public Services Group, sponsored by Broxbourne-based housing association B3Living, will formally launch the Behaviour Change Network, a facebook group to share tips and best practice in behaviour change theory and application.

Behavioural insights

Behavioural insights, often referred to as nudges, can be used to make small, cost-effective changes to improve your communications, and ultimately public services.

Outcomes can be improved by introducing a more realistic model of human behaviour, helping organisations to rethink how they can increase take up in services and encourage people to change their behaviours, but without instructing them to do so.

What the day will cover

The day will look at frameworks to identify and measure behaviour change problems,

  • Identifying barriers: situational, knowledge, behaviour and attitudinal
  • EAST (Easy, Attractive, Social and Timely)
  • TEST (Target, Explore, Solution, Trial)
  • Tips to measure and evaluate behaviour change interventions.

These models will be brought to life through a range of case studies,

  • Shifting people online, and one pay-by-phone parking
  • Increasing direct debit and e-billing take up
  • Tackling littering, fly-tipping and recycling
  • Tackling rent arrears
  • Helping residents to make healthier choices
  • Helping residents to better manage finance
  • The science behind letters, and shifting behaviour
  • How programmatic advertising can match audiences against behaviour to better target online advertising.

Speakers

Dr Jon White, honorary CIPR fellow, will open the event with an overview of behaviour change theory and current trends. He is a consultant in management and organisation development and public affairs. He is also a chartered psychologist, with a doctorate in psychology.

  • Dominic Ridley-Moy, Behaviour Change Consultant and founder of the Behaviour Change Network, CIPR Local Public Services Committee member
  • Mandy Pearse, PR and Marketing Consultant, CIPR President-elect 2020 and Chair of CIPR's Local Public Services Committee.
