Event description

Description

Learn how to apply behaviour change principles from the world's first government institution dedicated to the application of behavioural sciences.

We are delighted to announce our special guest speaker, Charlotte Bearn, the Head of Ventures at the UK Behavioural Insights Team (BI Ventures). CIPR Local Public Sector Committee member Dominic Ridley-Moy, a Behaviour Change Communications Practitioner, will also speak at the event. LPS Committee member Kerry Sheehan, a communications and marketing director in healthcare communications, will facilitate the event.

Behavioural insights, often referred to as nudges, can be used to make small, cost-effective changes to improve your communications, and ultimately public services. Outcomes can be improved by introducing a more realistic model of human behaviour, helping organisations to rethink how they can increase take up in services and encourage people to change their behaviours, but without instructing them to do so.

Work by the Behavioural Insights Team has shown:

  • simple text messages can bring forward millions in overdue tax or cut costs from missed NHS appointments.

  • sending a letter to a disadvantaged school pupil from a current university student from a similar background led to a 34 per cent increase in accepted applications by disadvantaged students to top universities.

  • new letters for drivers caught speeding led to a 20 per cent reduction in reoffending

  • whether you want to encourage residents to move to online channels, increase take-up of a service or pay their Council Tax promptly, these techniques can make a huge difference to your communications.

What you will learn?

The half-day workshop will give you the skills to apply behavioural insights in your own organisation covering the following topics:

  • nudge principles and techniques

  • case studies

  • planning and applying behaviour change principles

  • measurement and evaluation, including a run through of Test + Build, a digital platform developed by the Behavioural Insights Team, to design and run your own randomised controlled trials (RCTs).

By the end of the interactive session, you will have identified how you can apply these principles in your own organisation and make real and measurable improvements to your communications, at low cost.

Takeaways: delegates will receive copies of all resources and tools used in the session.

Dominic Ridley-Moy has worked in the local authority, social housing and charity sectors for more than 17 years. He will share his experiences working at Havering Council as their Campaigns and Marketing Manager; how he adopted nudge-style principles across a wide range of services, leading to better outcomes for residents, easier services for the public to use, whilst saving money at the same time.

Helping to facilitate the workshop, Kerry Sheehan has worked in PR in the public and private sector, working on health and brand behaviour change campaigns.
