Description

Behavioural Insights Unit

Why understanding behaviour matters

Behavioural insights can help us understand why people make seemingly sub-optimal decisions on issues such as why parents fail to take up the offer of free childcare despite evidence that it can narrow the attainment gap, why girls avoid STEM subjects despite substantial future returns, and why individuals who express an interest in teaching subsequently fail to apply.

Most importantly, we can make recommendations about what we can do about it. Understanding behaviour and how to change it is hugely important to effective policy design.

The Behavioural Insights Unit (BIU) has been set up within the Strategy Unit to embed behavioural insights in the department's policy-making process.

Its three main aims are to:

  • support the department to use behavioural insights to tackle policy challenges
  • help commission high quality behavioural research
  • build the department's knowledge and ability to apply behavioural insights

The unit is holding a seminar, chaired by Tim Leunig, to discuss its work and how it can be applied on 26 October 2017, 14:00 - 15:00, Earlsdon Park, Coventry, Room 9013.
