Event description

Description

The Royal School of Needlework was founded in 1872 by Lady Victoria Welby, Princess Helena was the first president and set up the school with the founding principles to revive a beautiful art which had fallen into disuse and through its revival, provide employmnet for educated women who without a suitable livelihood would otherwise find themselves compelled to live in poverty.

Beginning in a small room above a bonnet shop in Sloane Street and employing 20 ladies, after 30 years the School moved close to the V&A and employed 150 workers.

Our day will be hosted by the RSN's Chief Executive Dr Susan Kay-Williams who will open the doors to the hidden, historical treasures of school and conclude with a tour of the exhibition of Peacocks & Pomegranates from the Royal School of Needlework's Collection.
