Description

Behind the Mask - Imposter Syndrome

Over the past year or so many more celebrities are expressing their experiences of the imposter syndrome in the press. But that dread of being ‘found out’, the fear of making a mistake because it will ‘prove’ you’re not as good as people think you are, doesn’t just affect celebrities. It is technically called the imposter phenomenon and impacts around 70% of people at some point in their lives.

This whole day workshop will explore what the imposter phenomenon is, and what it isn’t; where it comes from and most importantly how you can deal with it if you experience it. But equally importantly we will also cover how you spot it in others and help them deal with it too – and it’s NOT by telling them how great they are at their job!

We will also cover some tips on how to manage people who experience the exact opposite, the Dunning Kruger effect. This is where underperforming people actually believe that they are really doing an excellent job.

The day will include:

  • What is the imposter phenomenon, why it isn’t a syndrome, and how it differs from self-doubt
  • What are the possible causes?
  • Strategies for handling the imposter feelings, and how to help others

and

  • Re-writing your story

The workshop is evidence based but highly practical, and your facilitator, Kate Atkin, will share insights from her own and others academic research on the imposter phenomenon.

Optional: see www.kateatkin.com/imposter if you’d like to read more on the topic before the day, or take the imposter phenomenon questionnaire
