Event description

Description

We are opening the doors of our cancer research laboratories at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine in Edinburgh to local supporters of our research: volunteers, ambassadors, staff and our local community of people affected by cancer. These special tours will be led by Dr Sarah Thomas, our Research Engagement Manager, who will guide you through the latest developments in cancer research in Edinburgh. Tours last 30 minutes, departing hourly at:

  • 11.00am

  • 12.00pm

  • 1.00pm

  • 2.00pm

  • 3.00pm

  • 4.00pm

This special event forms part of Doors Open Day at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, which includes free entry to our research showcase exhibition and programme of fascinating talks for a chance to hear from the pioneering individuals conducting life-saving research.

Thanks to research, more people are beating cancer than ever before. In the 1970s, only a quarter of people survived. Today, half will survive for ten years or more. Cancer Research UK has been working to beat cancer for more than 100 years. Our scientists have been involved in vital discoveries that have shaped modern cancer care, such as pioneering radiotherapy in the 1920s, developing chemotherapy from chemicals found in mustard gas in the 1940s and playing a role in the development of 8 of the world’s top 10 cancer drugs.

Please note: as the tours take place in a research environment, they are only open to participants aged 18+. However the research showcase exhibition and talks as part of Doors Open Day are open to all ages.
